Why racing margins balloon

Twenty runners, twenty places to spread a fee

On a three-way football match, a bookmaker's fee is spread across three prices. Add them up as probabilities and a 6% margin is easy to spot.

A Durban July field can carry twenty runners. Every one of those prices contributes a slice of margin, and no single price has to look unreasonable for the total to be enormous. Where a football market might total 106%, a big-field handicap can total 130% or more.

That is not a scandal, it is the arithmetic of large fields, and every book in the world does it. But it means two things for a punter:

The gap between books is proportionally wider. More prices means more room for two bookmakers to disagree.
Checking costs nothing and returns more here than anywhere. A one-point difference on a 7.00 shot is R200 on a R200 bet.

When is the Durban July run?

Traditionally the first Saturday of July, at Greyville in Durban. It has been run since 1897, making it the oldest and richest horse race in Africa. The exact date for each running is confirmed by the racing authorities earlier in the year.

Where can I find Durban July odds?

Every licensed South African bookmaker prices the July, usually opening ante-post months in advance and adjusting through the build-up. This page tracks those prices and, more importantly, the margin each book is charging on the race.

Why do Durban July odds differ so much between bookmakers?

Because a large field means many prices, and every price is somewhere a fee can sit. On a twenty-runner handicap the total margin can exceed 30% while every individual price still looks reasonable. That makes the July the most valuable race of the year to shop around on.

What is ante-post betting?

Betting on a race well before the final field is declared. You usually get a bigger price, but if your horse does not run you normally lose the stake. Some books offer non-runner-no-bet closer to the day at shorter prices, which is a genuine trade-off rather than a trick.
