Signs worth taking seriously

• Betting more than you planned, or more often than you planned
• Chasing losses with bigger stakes to get back to level
• Borrowing money, or betting money meant for something else
• Hiding how much you bet from people close to you
• Feeling anxious, irritable or low when you are not betting
• Betting to escape stress rather than for entertainment

One of these is worth noticing. Several together is worth a phone call.

Practical limits that actually work

• Set a deposit limit at the bookmaker, not in your head. Every licensed SA operator must offer one. A limit you have to phone someone to raise is a real limit.
• Decide the amount before you look at the fixtures. Deciding afterwards is deciding with your emotions.
• Never bet money with a job. Rent, school fees and groceries are not a bankroll.
• Take the cooling-off option. Operators offer temporary self-exclusion. Using it early is a strength, not an admission.
• Keep a record. People remember wins and forget losses. The total tells the truth.

Every licensed South African bookmaker must let you exclude yourself, and the National Responsible Gambling Programme can help you do it across operators rather than one at a time. Provincial gambling boards also maintain exclusion registers. Ask the operator or call the number above.
