Frequently asked

How do I know if a sportsbook is licensed in South Africa?
Three checks. (1) Footer: every SA-licensed bookmaker must display its licence number + the provincial gambling board that issued it, on every page. (2) Age + helpline: 18+ notice and NRGP helpline 0800 006 008 must appear on every page that touches money. (3) SA bank rails: a genuine SA-licensed operator accepts FNB, Standard Bank, ABSA, Capitec and Nedbank deposits and (since March 2026) clears PayShap. Crypto-only deposits are a red flag. The tool above checks the URL against the publicly-displayed licence registers of the five provincial regulators that license sports-betting bookmakers in SA.
What happens if I bet on a non-SA-licensed sportsbook from South Africa?
Two problems. First, most US sportsbooks (DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, FOX Bet) geo-block SA IP addresses outright, you cannot reach them. Second, if you bypass the geo-block via VPN and deposit, you have no SA-regulator escalation path. If the operator delays your withdrawal or voids your bet, no provincial gambling board can help because the operator is not under their jurisdiction. Stick to the SA-licensed list above. The full provincial-regulator map is on /sa-licensed-bookmakers/world-cup-2026/.
Is bet365 / William Hill / Unibet legal in South Africa?
No. None of bet365, William Hill, Unibet, Pinnacle, Stake or BC.Game hold a South African provincial bookmaker licence. They operate under UK, Malta, or Curaçao licences. SA residents who use them have no consumer-protection recourse under SA gambling law (Section 9, National Gambling Act, 2004). Bets placed with non-SA-licensed operators by SA residents fall outside the SA legal framework.
Which provincial regulator issued each SA bookmaker its licence?
Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board: Betway, TopBet, BetBus, Apex Bets, JackpotCity, Playabets, ZAR Bets. Mpumalanga Economic Regulator: 10bet. Under SA reciprocal recognition rules, a licence from any provincial board is honoured across all nine SA provinces. The list above reflects Edges' partner operators; the issuing board and licence number in each operator's site footer is the source of truth.
Does this tool catch every SA-licensed bookmaker?
It covers the SA-licensed bookmakers Edges partners with for World Cup 2026 coverage: the operators with meaningful soccer market depth, PayShap support, and English-language SA-resident accounts. Smaller provincial bookmakers (course-side, race-only, regional turf clubs) are not in scope. If the tool returns "not in our database" but you believe the operator is SA-licensed, check the issuing provincial board's public licensee register directly. Free tools cannot replace primary-source verification.
